Hub is born
On 1st April 2009, in the heart of Milan, in its Navigli area, the doors opened at Hub: the store, workshop and association springing from an idea by Barbara Zucchi Frua. Hub is a space where a person may make, buy or sell textile products or items gravitating around the home or the individual.
The store stocks unusual artisan creations and textile products that may be personalised, while the area given over to the workshop is where purchased items and products may be personalised or created using the equipment and materials made available. Thus Hub presents itself as an alternative to globalized consumerism and as an opportunity for small-scale producers to become known to the public. It’s a place where materials, techniques, skills and creativity are exchanged. A multi-purpose space offering itself as a stimulating meeting and exchange point. It’s a 'Made by Me' place where the underlying human element is rediscovered, so that the object itself takes on a different worth while allowing individual creativity to be unleashed. Hub’s creator is, as said, Barbara Zucchi Frua. Daughter and even granddaughter in an artistic family, she has drawn on her own textile background as well as her personal and family experience to create a democratic styling concept. Hub proposes items with a soul, objects far from the logic of passive consumerism. It offers an informal context for staying together, one that is also educational, thanks to the workshops catering to children and adults and to the contact with artists and craftsmen. “The atmosphere of the Renaissance workshop – where people learnt and taught by working together – has always fascinated me”, commented Barbara. “I hope Hub can stimulate and transmit energy and a desire to create: I feel we are all in particular need of these things nowadays.” In fact, the idea is to make Hub become a sort of Neverland: a place where people can work together while time passes by in another dimension, and enjoyment and fun go on endlessly.
